What is scholastic clay target shooting?

Trap Shooting

Trap is a game where a flying clay target is fired at with a shot gun.  It is similar to golf except for the fact that a shotgun is used here instead of a club.  It is essential to identify the angle of the target and the gun should be pointed at the place where the eyes are set.

The three popular trap events are the singles, the handicaps and the doubles.  In the singles event, a singe bird is shot at a close distance.  Handicaps are shot at various distances depending on a person's ability.  In doubles, two bird are launched simultaneously.

Skeet Shooting

The objective of skeet shooting is to shoot as many clay targets as possible with the minimum number of shots.  The clay pigeons emerge from the trap as the shooter aims for them.  Targets fly at 40 mph.  Skeet has a high house and a low house with traps inside.

The field has seven stations arranged in a half circle and the eighth station is positioned between the two houses.  A squad is comprised of five shooters.  A shooter fires first from one station before moving onto the next.  Each shooter fires 8 different shots from their various positions on the skeet range. If 24 birds are successfully hit, the last shot would come from the middle position.  The target for the last shot would come from the low house.  It is very difficult to complete a perfect round.

Sporting Clays

Of all shotgun sports, clays are the closest thing to actual field shooting.  Courses are designed to simulate the hunting of ducks, pheasants, other upland birds and even rabbits.  Targets may be thrown from any angle or distance, and six different sizes  of clay targets may be utilized.

Sporting clays are typically shot in squads of two to six people, and played over a course of 10-15 shooting stations laid around field or around the natural fields of the land - every course is different!
